Three "Helau" by Donzdorf (07/03/2019)

Last March 1, a delegation from the Calasparra Twinning Committee traveled to Donzdorf (Germany).

After the day, practically dedicated to travel, we arrived at Europaplatz (Europa Square) where we were warmly welcomed by our sister association, Europabaum, with its president, Rudi Mehn, at the helm.

Elisabeth Desaux, president of the Jumelage Committee of Riorges (France), was also waiting for us, along with some other members.

The rest of the day was spent with our hosts who kindly welcome us on all occasions.

The scheduled activities began soon on Saturday, March 2.

First we visited the Catholic Church of St Martinus, where a guide instructed us about the history of the city and the building itself, mainly.

In the temple itself, later, we were able to enjoy a surprising and exciting organ concert.

The famous organist Simon Johannes Fröstl, delighted us with pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia and Louis Lefébure-Wély.

A composer for each country participating in the meeting.

And we finished, listening to an improvisation that united the national anthems of the three countries and the European one.

At the end of the concert, the attendees gave a prolonged ovation to the musician.

Next, we went to the Gasthaus Stern restaurant, to enjoy the traditional Swabian cuisine with Weißwurst (white sausages) and pretzels.

After which we visited the ruins of the tower of Burg Staufeneck, from whose viewpoint we could contemplate a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire area of Donzdorf, Sußen and Salach.

The culmination of Saturday was the 12th Franco-German Friendship Dance in Gaststätte Hasenheim (The House of the Hare).

Which we attended this year for the third time from Calasparra.

The atmosphere, between dinner and dancing, was festive and unbeatable.

Highlighting the staging of Noda Biag'r (musical band that visited Calasparra in September 2017) that filled us with rhythm and energy.

Among various performances, the final highlight was the visit of the Prince of Carnival, Prinz Marco I, accompanied by his entourage.

On the third day in Donzdorf, the time was unbeatable for the great Carnival parade that celebrated its 62nd edition. There were 39 groups among comparsas, supporters' clubs, associations, and musical bands, in addition to 18 large satirical-themed carriages. We could see from the US president to the car brand of the CO2 emissions scandal, passing through the mayor of the city.

The parade was spectacular and impressed all the members of the Calasparro delegation.

Donzdorf has been working and betting heavily on the Das Fastnetdorf brand (The Carnival Village) and the results are evident.

After the parade we went to the Stadthalle (City Hall) where the afternoon ran between musical performances to which we salute with the usual triple Helau.

The mayor of Donzdorf, Matin Stöltzle, approached kindly to take an interest in the delegations of Calasparra and Riorges and give us his particular welcome.

Later, Europabaum, gave us a farewell dinner at Martinushaus.

At that point, the atmosphere was fraternal and close and all participants in the meeting talked about the pleasant experience.

Something that happens in all the occasions in which the citizens of the three twinned towns share time and see the reality that is Europe.

After some wonderful days at the Donzdorf Carnival, on Monday, March 4, we began the return to Calasparra wishing to return very soon and thanking Europabaum in general, and each of the people involved in this particular meeting, their generosity and hospitality.

But the projects never end.

Next May we will be witnessing the 40th anniversary of the twinning between Riorges and Donzdorf in the French city, where we will also attend the activities planned for its annual Fête des fleurs et des produits du terroir (Feast of Flowers and the Products of the Earth) .
