A score of young people throughout Spain help restore the natural state of the river Segura (24/07/2015)

About twenty young people from various parts of the country are working as volunteers in the environmental rehabilitation of the Segura River, under the Life + project Riverlink Segura.

Representatives of all organizations participating in the project: Segura basin, Community of Murcia, Murcia and Valladolid universities and ANSE as well as the City of Cieza and Calasparra, yesterday visited this activity to thank participants in a delivery initiative as beneficial for the river and its ecosystem.

Young people remain two weeks in Calasparra and during your stay is know how to restore the natural state of the river Segura and collaborate on some of the activities of the Safe Riverlink as cutting invasive and native species planted reeds, marking and fish survey also familiar with the measures being taken to prevent obstacles to their migration down the river.

A highway for fish

The Riverlink Safe Life + project led by the CHS, an agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and environment has a budget of 3.4 million euros and are financed by the European Union.

Its main objective is to ensure longitudinal connectivity of the river Segura, so that the species that inhabit the river to overcome the obstacles to their migration (such as dams) by scales and other systems of ascension.

These measures are especially beneficial for Gypsy catfish, a species native to the area.

Moreover, the riparian forest is also retrieves and training activities are conducted, provided the collaboration and commitment of local farmers and residents of the area are looking for.
