The final plenary session of the City Council unanimously approved the accession to the Covenant of Mayors Calasparra a Local Sustainable Energy.
The Covenant of Mayors is a formal commitment from the cities to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reducing CO2 emissions by improving energy efficiency and cleaner energy production, and the use made of it.
The Covenant of Mayors is the active response of the most committed to fighting global warming: a formal commitment to them to reduce their CO2 emissions in the urban environment, even beyond the EU targets.
Given that municipalities play a key role in reducing energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases, the purpose of the Compact is to set up all the resources that government and businesses have at their disposal to reduce consumption energy and current expenditures while improving quality of life of people, cares for the environment and generate business opportunities.
Murcia becomes the first region in which all municipalities, 45 municipalities, join this initiative by the European Commission.
